Summer Food Service Program
Summer BLAST is Kids at Their Best’s summer food and enrichment program designed to ensure children and teens have access to healthy meals, safe spaces, and meaningful activities when school is out.
Summer BLAST
Running for seven weeks during the summer months from June through July, Summer BLAST provides free breakfast and lunch for children and teens ages 18 and under, along with three hours of daily enrichment. Programs are flexible, welcoming, and designed so families can participate in a way that works best for them.
What kids experience at a Summer BLAST site
Each Summer BLAST site offers a consistent and supportive daily experience. Children begin their day with a nutritious breakfast, participate in hands-on enrichment activities, and enjoy a fresh lunch at no cost.
Daily activities include art, sports, and outdoor play, STEM projects, reading, games, and creative exploration.
Free summer meals for kids
Summer BLAST provides free breakfast and lunch for children and teens ages 18 and under.
Families are welcome to stop by so children can receive meals or stay to participate in enrichment activities, helping remove barriers to food access during the summer months.
Serving Morgan County and Northeast Colorado
Summer BLAST operates ten sites throughout Morgan County and up to eight satellite sites across Northeast Colorado.
Through partnerships with local organizations, Kids at Their Best provides meals, staffing, and support so communities without a permanent site can still offer Summer BLAST programming. Mobile meal delivery ensures children in rural and outlying areas have access to fresh meals.
Our impact
Each summer, Summer BLAST serves over 600 individual children and teens and provides more than 26,000 breakfasts and lunches across the region.
The program also supports youth leadership and workforce readiness by employing between 50 and 75 youth each summer through Kids at Their Best, along with up to 40 AmeriCorps members who serve in program roles and receive an educational stipend.
Beyond meals, the program creates safe, engaging spaces where kids can learn, stay active, and enjoy their summer.
Youth led and community rooted
Summer BLAST is powered by young people from the communities it serves. Many sites are supported by youth as young as 12 who grew up participating in the program and return to help lead activities and support younger kids.
With guidance and supervision from Kids at Their Best staff, youth leaders help create welcoming, safe spaces where children feel comfortable, supported, and excited to participate. Their lived experience brings energy, relatability, and a strong sense of community to each Summer BLAST site.
Why Summer BLAST matters
For many families, summer can mean limited access to food, fewer structured activities, and fewer safe places for children during the day. Summer BLAST helps fill these gaps by combining reliable meals for kids with enrichment and supervision.
By meeting basic needs while offering fun and engaging programming, Summer BLAST supports children’s wellbeing and helps prevent summer learning loss.
